Let Us Help You

Property

Found property, lost or stolen items, seized property and evidence, firearm release, and police auctions — how the Property Unit handles each.

Property Unit

Found property

Found property is held for 90 days, after which it may be lawfully disposed of if an owner has not been determined or the property remains unclaimed.

Lost or stolen property

Report lost or stolen items through the non-emergency line at 613-966-0882. Keep an inventory of your possessions — make, model, and serial numbers — and take photographs. A Bicycle Descriptor Sheet is available to record bicycle details. For lost or stolen passports, contact the Passport Program directly at 1-800-567-6868 rather than the police.

Seized property & evidence

Property seized by police or held as evidence can only be released with the authorization of the investigating officer. Property involved in court proceedings cannot be released until 30 days after the case concludes.

Firearm release

Firearms are released only by pre-scheduled appointment through the Property Unit. You must present a valid Possession and Acquisition Licence and any pertinent registration certificates. For restricted firearms, an Authorization to Transport (ATT) from the Chief Firearms Officer is required (1-800-731-4000).

Police auctions

Unclaimed property and retired police vehicles are auctioned online at govdeals.ca, with proceeds benefiting the Police Service Board's In-Trust Account.
