About the Board

The Belleville Police Service Board is the civilian body responsible for governance and oversight of the Belleville Police Service.

The Belleville Police Service Board provides civilian governance of the Belleville Police Service. It operates under Ontario's Community Safety and Policing Act, 2019, and its core duty is to ensure that adequate and effective policing is provided in the area for which it has responsibility, having regard to the needs and diversity of the community.

Composition

The Board is made up of five members: two Provincial appointees, two Council appointees, and one member of the community appointed by Council.

Administrative support to the Board is provided by Jennifer McTavish, Board Administrative Assistant.

Responsibilities

Under the Community Safety and Policing Act, the Board's responsibilities include:

  • Employing and appointing members of the police service
  • Recruiting and appointing the Chief of Police and Deputy Chief of Police
  • Developing a diversity plan that reflects the community
  • Monitoring the Chief of Police's performance and conducting an annual review
  • Overseeing matters of police discipline and facility standards
  • Performing other duties assigned to it by legislation
